Insurance FAQs
Insurance Claim Questions, Answered Plainly
Insurance claims for roof damage can feel overwhelming — confusing language, tight deadlines, and rules that vary by policy. The questions below are the ones Oklahoma homeowners ask us most often.
We’re not insurance agents, but we navigate this process every week. Use this page to understand where you stand before you make decisions that cost you money.
Coverage Basics
Does homeowners insurance cover storm-damaged roofs?
Most Oklahoma policies cover functional damage from hail, wind, or falling debris. Coverage depends on your policy type and the roof’s age. 5Coat helps document the damage and coordinate with your adjuster.
What is the difference between ACV and RCV roof coverage?
Replacement Cost Value (RCV) pays the full current cost to replace your roof, minus your deductible.
Actual Cash Value (ACV) factors in depreciation, often leaving homeowners with high out-of-pocket costs for older roofs.
Knowing which type you have matters — it can mean thousands of dollars in difference.
What is insurance depreciation on a roof?
Depreciation is the reduction in a roof’s value based on age and wear.
Under an ACV policy, the insurer subtracts depreciation from your payout.
Under an RCV policy, the insurer holds back depreciation until 5Coat provides proof that the full replacement is complete.
Will I have to pay anything if insurance covers my replacement?
You’re responsible for your deductible — that’s your policy obligation. Beyond that, if your coverage is RCV, insurance pays the full replacement cost.
Be cautious of contractors who offer to waive your deductible. Oklahoma law prohibits this for a reason — it can result in your claim being denied and your policy cancelled.
Will filing a roof claim increase my insurance premiums?
Storm claims are generally treated as acts of nature and typically don’t impact individual premiums the way liability claims do. However, frequent regional storms can lead to overall rate adjustments across a zip code.
The Claim Process
How long do I have to file a roof insurance claim?
Oklahoma law allows up to two years to file, but most carriers require notification within 6–12 months of the storm. Delays make it harder to prove the specific storm caused the damage.
Should I call a roofer or insurance company first after storm damage?
Start with a professional inspection to verify and document functional damage first. Filing an unverified claim can impact your policy history without providing a payout. A detailed inspection report gives you the proof needed to support a successful claim.
What documentation is needed for a roof insurance claim?
Insurers want high-resolution photos, a professional inspection report, and weather verification for your specific address. The 5Coat Evidence Package provides all of this — built on our Prove-It™ promise that every claim should be backed by photo evidence the adjuster can actually use.
Do I need multiple roofing estimates for an insurance claim?
Some insurers request multiple bids, but many rely on a single qualified contractor’s documentation. Accurate documentation often carries more weight than the number of estimates.
Can I choose my own roofing contractor for an insurance claim?
Yes. Oklahoma homeowners have the legal right to select their preferred licensed contractor. You’re not required to use the insurer’s recommended company.
What happens if my claim is denied?
Claims are often denied due to insufficient documentation or reporting delays. If this happens, 5Coat can provide a professional reinspection with the additional photographic and meteorological evidence needed for an appeal.
Oklahoma Insurance Law
Can a contractor legally waive my insurance deductible in Oklahoma?
No. Under Oklahoma State Statute Title 36 § 3614.1 and House Bill 1940, it’s illegal for a contractor to waive, absorb, or rebate a deductible. Doing so is insurance fraud. 5Coat operates strictly above the line — we never offer illegal incentives that could put your policy and home at risk.
How 5Coat Helps With Your Claim
How does 5Coat help with the insurance claim process?
We’re not insurance agents, and we don’t want to be. But we work with adjusters every week and we know what they need to approve a claim.
Every 5Coat inspection comes with a complete Evidence Package: drone imagery, on-roof climber documentation with timestamped photos, and verified weather data tied to your address. That gives your adjuster exactly the evidence they need — organized, professional, and easy to use.
Will 5Coat meet with my insurance adjuster?
Yes. Bryan can be on site during the adjuster meeting to walk through the documented damage and answer questions in real time. Having a contractor present often results in faster, more accurate claim approvals.
What is the 5Coat Evidence Package?
The 5Coat Evidence Package is our complete documentation system — built on the Prove-It™ promise that every claim we make should be backed by photo evidence you can see for yourself.
For insurance claims, your Evidence Package gives the adjuster organized, professional documentation they can actually use — not a folder of scattered phone photos.
That’s the Prove-It™ standard: every claim, every photo, every time.
